GiGi, the great horned owl, had a rough start to her life when she suffered head trauma believed to have been caused by a car. Fortunately, she was brought to Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue in May, where she met Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, the president of the rescue and a renowned “birds of prey whisperer.”

Under Pojeky’s attentive care, GiGi made a remarkable recovery, going from being critically ill to being able to perch and feed herself independently. Throughout her recovery, Pojeky and GiGi developed an extraordinary bond of trust and affection.

One day, Pojeky left for a visit to Michigan, leaving GiGi without his company for some time. When he returned, she welcomed him with open wings, quite literally. GiGi approached him, wrapped her wings around him, and rested her head on his shoulder, expressing her gratitude and love towards her rescuer.

Dubuisson, the founder and director of Wild at Heart, said, “I have never seen someone with such a bond with these magnificent birds.” The emotional moment between GiGi and Pojeky left everyone in tears and is a testament to the incredible connection that can form between animals and humans.
