MacRebur, based in Lockerbie, Scotland, is using granulated plastic waste mixed with traditional asphalt to create a material that lasts three times longer than traditional roads.
The recycled plastic replaces much of the ingredient bitumen in asphalt, which is created from fossil fuels, reducing the carbon footprint of the roads. The material is also more flexible, making it less prone to cracking under extreme temperatures.

MacRebur’s roads are not only eco-friendly but also cheaper and more cost-effective in the long run. This was further inspired by something his daughter had said in school, which made him want to do his part in reducing plastic pollution. “My daughter put her hand up and said ‘plastics Miss.’ Now I don’t want my little girl growing up in a world where this is the case,” he said.
