Turning Plastic into Roads: A Sustainable Solution to Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution has become a major environmental concern in recent years. With plastic being used in nearly every aspect of our daily lives, it has become nearly impossible to avoid its use. However, one UK based company is doing its part to help the environment by turning old plastic bottles into roads that are not only longer-lasting but also have a lower carbon footprint.

MacRebur, based in Lockerbie, Scotland, is using granulated plastic waste mixed with traditional asphalt to create a material that lasts three times longer than traditional roads.

The recycled plastic replaces much of the ingredient bitumen in asphalt, which is created from fossil fuels, reducing the carbon footprint of the roads. The material is also more flexible, making it less prone to cracking under extreme temperatures.

The idea for this green solution came from CEO Toby McCartney’s visit to India, where he saw plastic waste being used to fill potholes

MacRebur’s roads are not only eco-friendly but also cheaper and more cost-effective in the long run. The use of recycled plastic bottles, which are the most difficult to recycle, makes sure that the new or recyclable plastic bottles are not being used in the process. This not only reduces the amount of plastic waste in the environment but also provides a solution to the growing problem of plastic pollution.

This was further inspired by something his daughter had said in school, which made him want to do his part in reducing plastic pollution. “My daughter put her hand up and said ‘plastics Miss.’ Now I don’t want my little girl growing up in a world where this is the case,” he said.

This innovative solution can be used for not just roads but also driveways, airport runways, and parking lots. It is a step in the right direction for our planet and is an option that should be considered by everyone. By using plastic waste to create roads, MacRebur is not only reducing the amount of plastic in the environment but also providing a solution that is cheaper, longer-lasting, and has a lower carbon footprint.

In conclusion, MacRebur’s solution of turning plastic into roads is an ingenious idea that has the potential to make a significant impact on the environment. It is a green solution that not only reduces plastic waste but also provides a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional roads. We should all be doing our part in reducing plastic pollution and supporting companies like MacRebur that are making a difference.
