Arizona is the location of a petrified opal tree trunk that is 225 million years old.

There was a time, many millions of years ago when Arizona was covered in forests and wooded stretches. However, today, the northeastern part of the state is home to the Petrified Forest National Park, a stark contrast to the landscape we typically associate with forests and wooded stretches.

The petrified wood found in Arizona dates back to the Late Triassic period, which occurred approximately 225 million years ago. It is one-of-the world’s most famous natural tourist attractions and provides scholars with a wealth of information. The park extends across an area nearly 150 square miles in size and has an elevation greater than 5,000 feet.

Desert plants, such as grasses and cacti, make up most of the area’s vegetation. Around 225 million years ago, Arizona’s western boundary was adjacent to a sea, and the state was impacted by volcanoes spewing ash. This isn’t easy to fathom, but it did happen.

The wood underwent a process known as “capillary attraction” that absorbed silica as groundwater ran through it, making it possible for the wood to fossilize. The transformation of wood into stone occurs when it is buried in moist soil and allowed to remain there.

Minerals can enter it through the sediment, but other than that, there is a barrier that prevents the typical causes of deterioration. Because they are present in the groundwater where the wood is resting, minerals can make their way into the wood.
