K9 Bloodhound Finds Abducted 6-Year-Old Girl by Tracking Scent

K9s are an integral part of police departments worldwide. These four-legged heroes are trained to do tasks that human officers cannot, including using their powerful sense of smell to find people. In a recent case in DeKalb County, Tennessee, a K9 bloodhound named Fred, tracked down a missing six-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted by her father, Nicholas Reeder.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office suspected that the father and daughter were camping in the Pea Ridge community. They enlisted Fred’s help, who quickly got to work with an item of clothing belonging to the suspect. Fred tracked down the trail from the man’s home, leading deputies to a locked and reinforced outbuilding. They found the suspect and missing girl in the back of the shed behind blankets hanging from a makeshift clothesline.

Dogs’ incredible sense of smell makes them invaluable in finding missing people, and time is of the essence, especially when it comes to children. Nicholas Reeder was charged with child abuse or neglect of his daughter, and Kinzleigh was turned over to DeKalb County deputies. Deputy Tidwell recalled, “He licked her face and she gave him a big hug. I praised him and loved on him. I pulled the chicken reward out of my pocket. He ate the chicken and wanted to meet other people as if to say, ‘Look what I’ve done.'”
