Cats, even if they are not our own, can hold a special place in our hearts. Their independent yet affectionate nature often earns them a spot in the communities they inhabit. Stray cats, particularly in bustling cities, often roam the streets, relying on the kindness of strangers who feed and care for them. Among these street cats, one in Istanbul captured the hearts of many and became a symbol of love and connection—a cat named Tombili.

A Stray Cat Who Stole the Heart of Istanbul
Istanbul is a city well-known for its large population of stray cats, but Tombili stood out from the rest. With her round, plump body and relaxed demeanor, she became an iconic figure on the streets of Kadıköy, a district of Istanbul. Her characteristic lounging posture, reclining on the sidewalk with an air of nonchalance, was not only endearing but also exuded a calm wisdom that resonated with locals and visitors alike.
Tombili’s fame skyrocketed when photos of her iconic pose circulated online, capturing the hearts of many. People couldn’t help but smile at the sight of this charming, laid-back cat. She became a beloved figure, a living symbol of comfort and peace for the neighborhood.

The Heartbreaking Loss
Though Tombili lived a full and peaceful life, she passed away on August 1, 2016. For many, this was a tragic loss. Tombili wasn’t just a stray cat; she had become a part of the fabric of the community. Her presence was a constant, and her calming influence on the busy streets of Kadıköy was something that many people came to rely on.
When Tombili passed, the residents of Istanbul were determined to ensure her memory lived on. They knew that while many stray cats pass unnoticed, Tombili was different—she had earned her place in the hearts of the people.
A Statue as a Tribute
To honor the legacy of this beloved cat, the community came together to create a statue in her likeness. A Change.org petition was started, expressing the desire to immortalize Tombili and ensure she was remembered for years to come. The petition read, “We hope that Tombili is remembered and not forgotten in a similar way,” referring to the cat who had been a mascot of Kadıköy for 11 years.
Thanks to the efforts of the community and the success of the petition, artist Seval Şahin was commissioned to create the statue. The statue was placed in Tombili’s favorite spot on the Kadıköy sidewalk, where she had been known to relax for hours on end. The statue captured her in her famous lounging position, allowing visitors to remember her exactly as they had known her.
The statue was unveiled on October 4, World Animal Protection Day, as a tribute not only to Tombili but to all animals that bring joy and companionship to their communities.
A Place of Reflection and Remembrance
Tombili’s statue serves as a place of remembrance, a spot where locals and visitors can reflect on the impact animals have on our lives. It stands as a testament to the deep bond between people and the animals they care for, and the incredible way in which animals like Tombili can become integral to the spirit of a community.
One touching moment captured an actual cat visiting the statue, seemingly offering condolences to Tombili’s figure, further solidifying the emotional connection Tombili had with those around her.
Rest in Peace, Tombili
Though Tombili is no longer with us, her memory lives on through the statue and the countless stories shared by the people who knew her. Her story reminds us of the importance of kindness and the unique bond that forms between animals and the communities that embrace them.
Rest in peace, Tombili! You will always be remembered and loved, even long after your passing.
